Do you have an old silk kimono that’s gathering dust?
It’s time to bring it back to life!
Here are some easy steps to clean and restore your silk kimono:
- Gather the right supplies: You’ll need a gentle laundry detergent, lukewarm water, a large plastic bag or tub, a handheld or standing mixer, and a soft-bristled brush or sponge.
- Remove any protective layers: Silk kimonos often have protective layers such as silk padding or cardboard stiffeners that need to be removed before cleaning. Carefully remove these layers and set them aside.
- Wash the kimono: Fill a large plastic bag or tub with lukewarm water, add gentle laundry detergent, and place your kimono inside. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, agitating occasionally to ensure even cleaning.
- Rinse and dry: Drain the water from the bag, and gently rinse the kimono with cold water to remove any remaining detergent. Once clean, hang your kimono up to dry on a hanger or flat surface away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Reattach protective layers: If you have protective layers such as silk padding or cardboard stiffeners, carefully reattach them using the original adhesive or sewing thread.
- Store your kimono properly: Once your silk kimono is completely dry, it’s time to store it properly. Fold it neatly into a storage box or chest, and place it in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Remember, always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous part of your kimono first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.
